If you liked Cinderella Jane then you will want to read The Cricket, which was written after it. Cricket is Isabelle Bryce. She gets her nickname from Jerry Paxton in the first book, where we meet her as a 16 year old.In the beginning of this book she's a very intelligent, incorrigible, and entertaining four year old. Her parents aren't parents at all. They are idle rich dopes. Isabelle calls them Max and Wally. They don't deserve the titles of Mom and Dad. Max is the epitome of selfish. She's a beautiful woman married to a rich, shriveled, spineless man. She doesn't want to be bothered with the unattractive troublemaker that is her daughter. Wally loves his daughter, but not enough to stand up to his wife and be a real dad. The book covers Isabelle's life as she is shuffled from nurses to governesses. She's sent to live away at schools and runs away a few times. She has to grow up fast. Her adventures are never boring. You'll want to laugh, cry, and cheer when she finally finds someone to love her.
The book totally repeats the scenes from Cinderella Jane, which I think could have been summarized with other aspects of this girls life given more time. I would have loved to read more about Martin Christensen, who is in Cinderella Jane and has a few important passages here. I wish Ms. Cooke would have given him a book.
I love how this author writes dialog. She's got this little girl down perfectly. Read it, it's terrific.
