As 2009 passes its halfway point, I’m continuing my trek towards project management certification. On Wednesday (my 47th birthday by the way), I started the second of five required courses for the Bellevue Washington project management certification courses. The entire program requires 150 hours of class attendance and 105 of those hours are dedicated to these five core classes.

Intro To Project Management (completed)
Project Planning & Scheduling (just started)

Project Execution And Control
Project 2007 for Managers
Project Management Practicum

I’ve already taken two elective classes towards my 45 hour total and these were ...

Understanding And Developing A Work Breakdown Structure

I have mixed set of reasons for exploring project management material, some of which I’m still discovering! As an independent FileMaker consultant, I do feel this study is helping deliver better databases to my customers. Spending 10 hours on how to best define client scope can easily be more valuable in the big picture than spending 10 hours learning some of the more obscure implementations of FileMaker technology.

Have to also say I’m a bit concerned about what may be the apparent shrinking of the FileMaker marketplace and the questionable focus of the FileMaker business unit. I don’t understand how Bento can have a large collection of features that have been requested and unfilled for our beloved FileMaker application. I’m also concerned about the number of companies and professionals that used to be dedicated to FileMaker design. These companies seem to exploring faster evolving and more lucrative endeavors such as web design, FLASH integration and even relationships with software as a service vendors like Salesforce.com! To add more fuel to the paranoid fire, looking at posted job opportunities for FileMaker design professionals is disheartening.

The correlation between how a FileMaker database project is built and how it is managed (or mismanaged) is evident to anyone that has spent anytime in this business. So I’m exploring a backup career as a project manager that will ultimately make me a better FileMaker developer. I’m also enjoying the study of project management topics and wanted to start this blog in order to share them with a wider audience.

So I’m not abandoning my FileMaker roots (yet) but I do plan on committing myself to learning more and more about the overall world of project management.

Here is a listing of posts that I did for the FileMaker Business Explored blog that were the predecessors and inspiration to these blog posts.
